A municipal program will ensure that elderly people who live alone in their homes receive the periodic call of university students who will talk to them several times each week to take an interest in their state and combat their loneliness.
The program, in which the universities of Murcia, the Polytechnic of Cartagena, the Catholic University of Murcia, the ISEN and the youth volunteers of Implica2 collaborate, has already been launched by the technicians of the Senior Service in the area of Social Services, as reported by the person in charge, the deputy mayor, Noelia Arroyo.
“The objective of the program is to keep older people who live alone and who do not have a network of family members to help them overcome a loneliness that is making them very hard in these weeks of confinement.
We have already called many of them and they are thanking us because isolation in these conditions can produce feelings of abandonment and sadness that we want to combat "
The system designed by the Social Services technicians aims to accompany 400 elderly people who have already been identified because they are beneficiaries of telecare services, but it will be extended to any elderly who need it and let them know on the Senior Care telephone numbers 968 128804 and 968 128851 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
The university volunteers will be distributed among the elderly with the supervision of the municipal specialists to guarantee a minimum of four weekly calls, posed as an intergenerational experience in which they achieve the company's objective, sharing experiences, transmitting security and keeping alert to any need that present the user.
University students pursuing medical degrees will also be able to direct conversations to their physical and mental health.
UPCT, UMU, UCAM and ISEN are already assembling teams of volunteers among their students and the Department of Youth has also communicated the initiative to the volunteers of the Implica2 program.
The municipal technicians are contacting all the identified major solos to offer them the telecompany service.
