Cartagena City Council adheres to the commemoration of the International Day of the Gypsy People (08/04/2020)

One more year, the International Day of the Gypsy People is commemorated on April 8, a celebration that will be different due to the health crisis generated by COVID 19, and to which the City Council of Cartagena adheres, a pioneer for years in responding to work for and with this group.

Along these lines, it should be noted that the design of an Inclusion / Promotion Plan with the Population is being developed, in addition to a good number of measures aimed at promoting and guaranteeing the cultural diversity of our city and equal opportunities.

Through the Gypsy Development Plan, the Cartagena City Council together with the Abraham Project carry out two community intervention projects in the Virgen de la Caridad and Villalba neighborhoods.

Precisely on the occasion of the International Day of the Gypsy People, in the Virgen de la Caridad neighborhood, the women of the neighborhood had started sewing flags a few months ago and since Tuesday they shine on the balconies of the Human Rights Plaza.

Today, April 8, and due to the time we have to live this year, this day is honored through a video made with more than 20 recordings that the neighbors have sent and where professionals from CEIP Estela Maris, educators from the area and neighborhood representatives.

The city of Cartagena, like many others, adheres to this commemoration in its faithful commitment to work with the Roma ethnic group, its representatives and entities.

The work carried out by social entities in this municipality stands out, such as Cáritas, the San Vicente de Paul Charity Association, the San Pendro Asylum Store Foundation, Rascasa, the Federation of Gypsy Faga Associations, the Abraham Project, the Gypsy Association O'udar Kaló, the Neighborhood Associations, Gypsy Associations, as well as municipal departments, through the Department of Social Services.

The International Day of the Gypsy People was established after the celebration in 1971 of the I World Gypsy-Romá Congress in London, with the participation of delegates from 14 countries.

The Congress was convened by the "International Gypsy Committee" (federation of various national organizations).

The main resolutions were: acceptance as a name that unites Romaní, his flag and a hymn, Gelem, gelem (Anduve, anduve).
