RTVE 2 traces the literary map of Cartagena (02/04/2020)

The literary program of La 2 de RTVE, Page 2, dedicated this Tuesday March 31st a part of its weekly broadcast to draw the literary Map of Cartagena, in the last program produced with new materials, shot before the confinement by the pandemic.

This is a review of the prominent names that link the municipality with the history of literature: from the Greco-Latin classical authors, to San Isidoro, passing the Andalusian poet Hazim al-Qartayanni, or the authors of the Golden Age (Cervantes, Quevedo ), or in the 19th century, Hans Christian Andersen, until reaching the 20th century with the relationship of the city with the life or work of authors such as Benito Pérez Galdós, Ramón J, Sender, Miguel Hernández, or the poets and writers of local roots such as Carmen Conde and Antonio Oliver, and on horseback with our century, the very new poet José María Álvarez, or the novelists Arturo Pérez Reverte and María Dueñas.

In addition, the program also devoted its attention to the cultural activity related to the book in the current Cartagena, which is of great intensity and remarkable originality, since with the initiative of the City Council, either directly or through municipal public support for initiatives and projects of the society itself, Cartagena offers a set of proposals and programs of great value and scope around the book and reading.

Precisely, in the program of Page 2 some of these proposals appear through the interventions of the Coordinator of Culture of the City Council, Patricio Hernández, of the poet and bookseller Vicente Velasco, of the poet and translator Natalia Carbajosa, and of the writer and professor Diego Sánchez Aguilar.

Municipal programs such as The Mandarache Prize, a pioneering project of the Department of Youth and winner of the National Prize for the Promotion of Reading, are cited from this panorama, which in these fourteen years has achieved, like no other initiative, turning thousands of adolescents into faithful followers to literature.

He also recognizes La Mar de Letras, the literary section of the La Mar de Músicas festival, which has been inviting Cartagena for two decades to outstanding representatives of literature from the countries invited to the festival;

the Oliver Belmás International Poetry Prize organized by the Popular University of Cartagena and which is going for its edition number XXXIII;

the Deslinde poetic festival, linked to the previous award, and which is now in its fifth edition;

or the Cartagena Piensa program, dedicated for three years to scientific and philosophical testing.

For its part, the very active Municipal Municipal Libraries Network has 33 reading clubs, with hundreds of participants, with a School Reading Plan, arranged with schools, ranging from Early Childhood Education to the First Cycle of Secondary, and with programs like Open Book, which is a week of literary events around International Book Day, in addition to many other activities (meetings with the author, children's storytelling, workshops, etc.).

This intense work of our libraries was recognized in 2014 with the Prize for the best initiative to promote reading in libraries open to the public, awarded by the Federation of Editors' Guilds of Spain.

Another municipal program that deserves to be highlighted is that of the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, which with the name of Reading, thinking, imagining is the setting for multiple book presentations of all kinds and for all audiences.

But to this we must add the social initiative project La Botica del Libro, dedicated to integration through culture and interculturality, which takes place in the neighborhoods of Lo Campano and José María Lapuerta, and which won, among others, the Prize National Promotion of Reading of the Ministry of Culture in 2014, allowing Cartagena to have two prizes for promoting reading.

On the other hand, there is the intense work carried out by the Network of Municipal Libraries.

We must also mention the Bazar de Letras program of the Universidad Popular, which has been developing literary workshops in the city and neighborhoods for twenty years;

or the literary cycles, already consolidated, and dedicated to genre literature, such as the Week of Historical Novel (it has been going on for two decades) or Cartagena Negra, days dedicated to black, police and mystery literature, which has already reached its Fifth edition.

You could still cite a list of literary prizes that are awarded each year from different neighborhood associations or councils, or from schools, which mostly have municipal aid.

On the other hand, the City Council has declared Cartagena "hernandiana city", for its links with the poet Miguel Hernández and has been developing a work to disseminate his work and figure,

And, outside the municipal sphere, the work of the city's bookstores that develop cultural programs is also worth mentioning, as in the case of La Montaña Mágica, which has just created its own publishing label ( failure), constitute an impressive display of authors and editorials that visit Cartagena continuously.

In this same sense, it is necessary to refer to the publishers that were born and have their headquarters in Cartagena, which are forming some worthy catalogs, among which Editorial Balduque, Malbec Ediciones, or Editorial Corbalán should be mentioned.

"Cartagena is a municipality that cares for literary culture and the promotion of reading, which seeks with multiple initiatives, as has been shown, and through the municipal impulse and commitment, that the entire population has access to books and literature in all its modalities and genres, for all ages and social groups, as a privileged instrument of social and cultural progress ", highlighted the councilor for the Culture Area, David Martínez.
