The Ministry of Defense has hired the rehabilitation works for the section of the Carlos III Wall of the Arsenal.
The objective of the Ministry is to try to shorten the periods established by the Public Procurement Law as much as possible to enable the start of rehabilitation as soon as possible, although the procedures that any work in a Property of Cultural Interest requires and the cost of performance, exceeding 200,000 euros, hinder the agility of the process.
The rains of last week caused the detachment of Bulwark number 9 of the Wall of Carlos III without causing personal damage.
This Bastion, like the rest of the Arsenal wall, is assigned to the Ministry of Defense and listed as a Property of Cultural Interest.
The actions for the conservation and maintenance of the Bastion are included in the technical project that has already been approved by the General Sub-Directorate for the Protection of Historical Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports in compliance with the Spanish Historical Heritage Law.
After the collapse, the detached materials were immediately sorted, signaled, and the shoring was placed for their support and stabilization.
In addition, Defense has started new works while the rehabilitation works are awarded and started.
Prior to this detachment, and to avoid the progressive deterioration of the Bastion, as well as to guarantee the integrity and safety of people, the appropriate urgent measures had already been taken: cleaning and removal of vegetation, placement of safety mesh, removal garbage and rubbish in the flower bed, recovery of the detached brick pieces, cleaning of small elements and perimeter fencing.
