The Church increases support for vulnerable groups in Cartagena during this pandemic (27/03/2020)

Since the state of alarm began on March 15, the Church - through Cáritas - has intensified its social work in different parts of the Region of Murcia to continue serving and providing support to people in vulnerable situations.

One of the municipalities where these measures are being carried out is Cartagena, where Cáritas coordinates with the City Council in order to serve as many people as possible.

"In Cartagena, the collaboration of the Church with the Social Services of the City Council is great from the first moment, to be able to reach the maximum number of people who need it, all united," says Petri García, coordinator of Cáritas Cartagena and councilor for the area. pastoral number four.

The Coto Dorda spirituality house is one of the resources that the Bishop of Cartagena, Mons. José Manuel Lorca Planes, has put at the service of the Cartagena City Council.

There, they can serve up to 40 homeless people.

As of today, Coto Dorda accommodates 28 people, of which 12 are users of the Sagrada Familia Home in Cáritas.

"The intention is to unify the resources to have to resort to the smallest possible number of personnel and avoid infections," says Petri García.

The lunches and dinners of the Coto Dorda are held from the Jesús Maestro and Pastor de Cáritas dining room, which also continues to serve its users every day, in the morning and at night.

"In the dining room we have different technicians from the entity and a chef from the eh! -Caritas Hospitality School- and, as in all services, we are carrying out the security measures that have been recommended by the health authorities" .

The Commissary is another resource that Cáritas maintains in operation in Cartagena.

In it people in situation or at risk of social exclusion have access to food and hygiene and cleaning products.

"With this situation caused by the pandemic, the number of families referred by the City Council has increased, so this service is needed more than ever."

The attention of this project is maintained exclusively with contracted personnel from Cáritas.

"Our volunteers, being many of them older, are people at risk from this pandemic and we must minimize risks and protect them."

In addition, the Commissary also supplies the cleaning and hygiene products that are being used in the Coto Dorda.

"Security measures similar to that of supermarkets have been applied: two-by-two entry, security distance, etc. And, for the moment, everything is going well."

On the other hand, the parish Caritas of this pastoral zone continue to be active to attend to the needs of their participants.

According to Petri García, the 29 parishes of Cartagena have been closed to worship, but their parish Caritas are still open, serving those in need.

In addition, different parish halls have been provided for the delivery of food deliveries that the Army is carrying out, in collaboration with the City Council.

The parishes that have offered to do this service are: Sacred Heart of Jesus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Our Lady of Hope, Christ of Health, The Immaculate Conception and Saint John the Baptist.

"As you can see, the Church is not at a standstill," says Petri García, "the Church is on the way, it is on the outskirts and with those who need it most, as Pope Francis asks of us; and those who cannot be active, like many of our volunteers, they are praying for all of us. "
