The Cartagena City Council has launched a Social Emergency Operation to guarantee the supply of food and medicines to all the needy population of the municipality, given the extension of the period of confinement and the worsening of the economic crisis generated by the Covid crisis- 19.
"Until now we have guaranteed the distribution of food to students who had a scholarship for school meals and to families and senior citizens who we knew were in need.
But we know that every day the number of people who need our help increases and that is why we have created a special operation with which to give them an answer, â€said the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, in the appearance that she developed this morning on the Internet to explain new measures about coronavirus ..
The City Council has bought to guarantee the launch of this operation approximately 10,000 kilos of basic foodstuffs, mainly milk, cookies, coffee, sugar, pasta, tuna, oil, fried tomato, lentils, flour, rice and chickpeas, among others.
In addition, it has acquired infant feeding and diapers;
household cleaning products, such as ammonia;
and personal hygiene products, such as shampoo and gel.
In the operations center, food batches are prepared for families of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 members, taking into account if there are babies, to ensure that food needs are covered for one or two weeks and that they will begin to distribute tomorrow Thursday.
Volunteer officials from Education, Sports, Youth, Equality and Infrastructure are currently working in the warehouse, which has been started, and answering the phones.
The entire operation, which also includes the Tercio de Levante of the Marine Corps, whose military will be in charge of food distribution, is being supervised by Social Services personnel.
A Unique Social Telephone has been enabled, with nine six eight, zero two one, one two three (968 021 123), which will start operating on Monday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. without interruption, so that they can request to be included in this food distribution device.
Until then, calls will also be answered on the phone of the Department of Social Services, at 968 128 841.
The logistics center is already fully operational with the arrival of the first 250 boxes for delivery, donated by the company Palet Ecológicos de La Puebla, with the intermediation of Coag.
“I want to thank the companies that are turning to us, donating material and food to us;
as well as all the municipal personnel who are collaborating, the volunteers of the Food Bank and the Marines of the Tercio de Levante who will take care of the distribution.
Only by working together will we manage to overcome this crisis, â€explained Castejón.
Regarding the distribution of medicines, it will be the Civil Protection volunteers, with the supervision of the Fire Department, who will take the medicines to the people who need it.
