Households with positive or coronavirus quarantines should use only the green container and stop recycling (19/03/2020)

The Cartagena City Council has updated the protocol for the management of waste from homes and establishments with the presence of people infected with coronavirus, to guarantee maximum protection for operators and to maximize sanitary guarantees in the process of eliminating waste.

"All waste in positive and quarantined households will be deposited exclusively in the green container, inside plastic bags with airtight closure, and will no longer be recycled, that is, no selective collection of waste will be made," stressed the councilor. of Infrastructures, María Casajús, who recalled that "try to deposit the garbage in the containers from 8 in the afternoon to avoid risks and ensure that the waste is as little time as possible on the street."

Following the recommendations of the health authorities, the process will be carried out in three phases.

First, the waste and disposable material used by the patient will be deposited in an airtight plastic bag in a garbage can located in the room where the patient is isolated.

As far as possible, the dustbin should be with a lid and an opening pedal.

In a second phase, this bag must be closed properly and put into another hermetic plastic bag that will be located next to the exit of the room, and in which the caregiver will get rid of its protective elements (glasses, masks, gloves) that it will close properly before leaving the room.

In a third phase, this bag will be introduced with the rest of the domestic waste in the garbage bag, which will have to be plastic and hermetic, and which will always be deposited in the corresponding green container.

All of this waste will be taken directly to the landfill.

Immediately after, citizens must take extreme measures of hand hygiene, with soap and water, for 40 to 60 seconds.

To maximize hygiene and safety measures, the City Council began Monday with the daily disinfection of the handles and hatches of the containers to avoid the risk of contagions, which are being carried out by the workers of the concessionaire company, the councilwoman said.

On the other hand, Casajús has stressed that "it is very important that households that do not have any patients with Coronavirus, intensify the separation of waste and recycle, depositing them in the corresponding containers, to prevent treatment plants and landfills from filling up" .

On the other hand, waste from hospitals, ambulances, health centers, laboratories and other services that are in contact with COVID-19 will continue to be managed in accordance with the regional regulations on medical waste and the specific protocols of said centers.

Although it is important, to influence the use of the available containers to optimize the management and efficiency of municipal services.

PLANT PROTECTION

The City Council has also increased internal management protocols to protect the operators of waste management plants.

Following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the General Directorate for the Environment of the Autonomous Community, no manipulation of the waste from the green container will be carried out in the treatment plants that will go directly to the landfill, in order to take extreme precautions and protect against the risk of contagion of workers.

Therefore, it is very important that those people not infected by the coronavirus recycle in their homes.

On the other hand, those responsible for the waste treatment plant must establish a specific protocol to protect their workers against the risk of contagion by coronavirus, or review existing ones, in addition to equipping them with the individual protection equipment (PPE) established by the occupational risk prevention service.
