The mayoress asks the Government delegate for the help of the Armed Forces and the opening of the Naval Hospital (17/03/2020)

The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, held a videoconference this morning with the Government delegate, José Vélez, who has requested the involvement of the Armed Forces to help the people of Cartagena most in need and to study the option of partially opening the Naval Hospital to care for homeless people who are also very vulnerable to contagion and require continuous social assistance.

The petition is based on instructions from the Spanish Government itself to create a social protection shield for the homeless.

These instructions include the support of the Armed Forces to social services to form units that daily deliver hygiene, food and drink kits to the homeless, explain preventive measures, measure their temperature and guide them if necessary.

Likewise, the empowerment of social canteens to give food to take along with the reinforcement of centers and creation of spaces where to serve the most vulnerable people conveniently.

The mayor explained to the delegate that there is a weaker sector of the population that requires special attention as well as accommodation.

"It would be good if a part of the Naval Hospital were enabled to shelter these people, that the Army will take care of their protection while the Social Services of the City Council would take care of the rest of the needs," Castejón explained.

In this same sense, the mayor has indicated that, given the involvement of the Armed Forces in Cartagena society, it would be good to count on their collaboration for logistical issues such as the distribution of food to the elderly or people with reduced mobility.

Currently, the City Council provides around 400 meals a day, but it is foreseeable that this number will increase and Social Services does not have either staff or adequate means of transport to meet more demands.

"That is why it would be very positive to have the help of the army," stressed the mayor.

In the same way, it has asked the Government delegate to guarantee the supply of sanitary material for all municipal personnel, as well as maximum coordination with the different State Security bodies so that the service provided to Cartagena is the most suitable.

Lastly, the mayor has placed special emphasis on the need for aid to be put in place for the tertiary sector since, in the face of summer, there are specific actions by the central government to boost tourism in our municipality, since for the purposes of the confinement will be added those caused by the bad state of our Mar Menor.

The delegate of the Government has been very receptive and diligent to the mayor's proposals and has indicated that he will shortly respond to municipal proposals.
