The mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, appeared before the media this afternoon to report on the measures that the municipal government is taking, after holding a meeting with the government team and the board of spokespersons, in accordance with the recommendations made by the regional government and the national government, to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the municipality of Cartagena.
These measures, which as indicated by the first mayor, "are not final, but depend on the guidelines that are being established by both the regional government and the national government" will continue until March 31, and may be extended in case of the health situation requires it.
The first decision was to close the elderly centers of the municipality, as well as the suspension of activities in women's centers, neighborhood associations, courses of the Popular University, in municipal libraries and in municipal sports facilities.
In addition, there will be no guided tours or extraordinary activities in municipal museums, sites and public buildings.
The restrictions will also apply to weddings held at municipal facilities, which can only be attended by a maximum of 25 guests.
Another measure to avoid crowds is the suspension of the markets with the highest influx, which is the case of El Bohío, Los Dolores, El Algar, Cabo de Palos, the Zenith and the Mediterranean Urbanization.
The rest, whose public influx is lower, remain, although eventually, since this decision may vary in the coming days.
Regarding the activity of the government team, Ana Belén Castejón assured that they will not attend mass events and will reduce their meetings, “the opening and closing events of the different municipal activities and theatrical programming will be avoided and, for Regarding schools, although it is not our competence, we had requested the suspension of extracurricular activities, but also, the Department of Education has just communicated to us that, as of Monday, March 16, classes are suspended in schools and universities †.
In this sense, a protocol is being worked on that guarantees the reconciliation of the personal and working life of officials.
As for the activity in the municipal facilities, the dependencies of the City council will remain open, although a protocol is being elaborated to reinforce the security in the services of attention to the public and to study contingency measures.
In this regard, the mayor has launched an "appeal to citizens to use telematic means whenever possible to carry out administrative procedures, avoiding traveling to municipal facilities, and residents of neighborhoods, recommend that they go to their OMITAS if necessary â€.
Finally, Ana Belén Castejón recalled that "all these measures are designed to prevent the virus from spreading, so it is necessary that all citizens become aware of the need to collaborate and avoid unnecessary alarms."
The measures have been reflected in a side of the Mayor's Office, which suspends activities of more than 50 people, closes children's schools and street markets and advises the elderly to stay home.
