The international parabádminton meeting, which was to be held in Cartagena on March 10 and 15, has been suspended by indication of the Ministry of Health within the COVID-19 contagion prevention measures.
The rally was to bring together 370 athletes from 46 countries in the Sports Palace.
The decision has been adopted after the meeting held yesterday in Cartagena by the vice mayor, Noelia Arroyo and the general directors of Health and Sports, José Carlos Vicente and Francisco Javier Sánchez, with heads of regional and national badminton federations.
After consulting with ministerial officials, the General Directorate of Public Health has established that the meeting should not be held by being among the countries of origin “many considered as risk areas of transmission of COVID-19” and that, the number of participants, the long duration of the event and the dispersion of the accommodations “do not allow adequate control and monitoring”.
The deputy mayor and head of the Sports Department has lamented that the circumstances have led to the suspension of this international meeting that had been prepared with special effort and enthusiasm from the Badminton Club of Cartagena and by the president of the regional federation, the Cartagena Pedro Caparrós, to whom he has especially thanked his work and responsibility.
The representatives of the City Council and the regional government have expressed to the federal officials of the badminton their willingness to work together to make Cartagena host meetings of this sport.
