The medium-term trend of unemployment in the Region continues to be positive since the number of unemployed registered in the Region of Cartagena decreased by 1,074 people compared to the same month of the previous year, February 2019, which represents a decrease of 3, 6%

With respect to February 2019, unemployment was reduced in February 2020 in all sectors, especially in agriculture (-8.5%), and among the unemployed without previous employment (-10.7%).

By sex and age, unemployment in the whole of the Region increased among those over 44 (+ 2.2% in men and + 1.5% in women), while it was reduced in the rest of the age groups.

COEC prudently assesses the percentage decrease in unemployment registered during the month of February 2020 in the Region (-1.0%), which contrasts both with the increase in unemployment experienced in February 2019 (+ 0.5%) and with the average increase in unemployment in the months of February of the last 10 years (+ 1.1% for the period 2010-2019).

Therefore, the February unemployment data for the Region of Cartagena is better than usual in the months of February.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of unemployed registered in the Region was reduced by 451 people in February 2020 compared to January 2020, which represents a decrease of 1.7%.

This data reinforces the idea indicated above that the evolution of unemployment in the Region in February 2020 has been much more positive than usual in the months of February.

In fact, after several months of atony in regard to the reduction of seasonally adjusted unemployment in the Region, its fall in February places it at levels not reached since March 2009.

The president of COEC, Ana Correa, prudently assessed this positive evolution of unemployment figures during this month, with the largest decrease in unemployed in February of these last 10 years.

However, from the Confederation there is some concern about the decrease in the number of contracts signed in the industry (-16.7%) compared to last January.

COEC also warns of a greater fall in year-on-year contracting in the Cartagena region, 4.9 points above the regional average.

“We are happy for a month of February with a different behavior than expected.

However, the forecasts for the labor market are not optimistic for the coming months.

The tourism sector is very concerned about the situation of the Mar Menor and the beaches of our region.

It is necessary a quick action to save the Easter season and summer.

Without ruling out the effects that the coronavirus epidemic may have on the reserves, â€said Correa.

“The agricultural sector, a great job seeker, needs sufficient water resources to guarantee their crops.

From COEC we demand that each and every one of the necessary transfers be made, with the flow rates recommended by the technicians.

We need a great national water pact to guarantee the survival of our agribusiness sector, â€concluded the president of COEC.

Finally, Ana Correa insisted on the need for a new Industrial Plan that allows the creation of new business opportunities and, therefore, the generation of employment and wealth for our region.
