The Argentine researcher Ariel Vicente gives this year for the first time presentations at the International Course on Postharvest Technology and Minimum Processing, which today celebrates its fourteenth edition at the UPCT.
He is one of the numerous international experts and students from a dozen countries that attend the course, despite the global epidemic of Covid-19 that has forced the cancellation of numerous conclaves in various countries.
"The coronavirus did not spoil me, coming here is worth it," says the professor of the Agribusiness area of ​​the Argentine National University of La Plata.
Vicente already participated a few years ago in a seminar organized at the UPCT, like this course, by the Research Group on Post-Collection and Refrigeration (GPR), "a world reference", in the words of the Argentine teacher, who also considers the course of Postharvest "one of the most important in the whole world".
The papers of the Argentine researcher will deal with the factors of deterioration of the vegetables that can be controlled by refrigeration and the strategies to reduce the excessive softening of agri-food products.
Both will take place next Monday.
One at 9:40 a.m., and another at 4 p.m.
"For Latin American researchers, it is very useful to come to congresses like this one, in which technologies that are being incorporated into production in Europe are put in common, but are also applicable in America," says Vicente, giving as an example the advances in genetic improvement or in vegetable grafts to prevent pests or to adapt the crop to the state of the soil.
Of the presentations that have been held since this morning at the School of Agronomists of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), the Argentine researcher is especially interested in "those related to the latest techniques in modified atmospheres".
