The Civil Guard surprises two poachers in Cartagena (28/02/2020)

They have seized all the tools used in the illicit activity clarified, such as a boat, an engine and fishing gear

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the CARM Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, has developed a device to clarify a series of illegal activities related to fishing in Cartagena, which has resulted in the location and denunciation of Two alleged poachers.

After the device, which is framed in the 'Annual Plan for Comprehensive Control of Fishing Activities (PACIAP)', fishermen have been denounced for several violations of the regulations of Maritime Fisheries and Merchant Marine, and have been seized the boat, an engine and the fishing gear used by them, presumably, in the illicit activity clarified.

The actions began when inspectors of the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment (Fisheries and Aquaculture Service) of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM) requested the collaboration of the Nature Protection Service ( SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard for the location of several fishermen who had fled after being caught fishing illegally in the area of ​​Portman and El Gorguel.

The police deployment made immediately allowed to locate the vessel used by the escapees, without registration or engine, stranded on the beach of El Gorguel, so the necessary services for the location of the owners of the boat were intensified.

A few hours later and thanks to the investigations carried out, two individuals were located who, in the presence of the agents, fled with the vessel by sea.

Immediately, the members of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Service activated one of the vessels dedicated to the control of fishing in the Murcian coast that was sailing and registering the coves of the coast from Cartagena to Portman until it located hidden behind some stones, in the Cola Creek de Caballo, the vessel that had fled, the engine was outboard and the fuel tank also hidden among thickets, although the escapees were not found, who were forced to hide and leave the vessel before harassment by the Civil Guard deployment on the coast.

The device established by the Benemérita on the ground, both for road controls and surveillance on the beach of El Golguel, caused the fence to be narrowed to the escapees and allowed to identify, among others, a vehicle upon arrival at the beach of The Gorguel led by a woman and with two occupants.

The exhaustive inspection carried out on the vehicle allowed the civil guards to find all the fishing and diving gear for illegal fishing.

In addition it was found that both men wore wet and hidden clothes in plastic bags, apparently not to be related to the leak made a few hours earlier.

They were also found hidden in the vehicle the key of another vehicle that was found to be parked about 300 meters away from the place where the boat was stranded and that had been used by the suspects to reach the beach that same morning and that, being surprised by the Civil Guard, they fled.

The investigation shows that when they were cornered, they allegedly hid the boat in the Cola de Caballo cove and left on foot to the road where they were picked up by the sentimental couple of one of them.

The boat, along with the engine, the fuel tank and other fishing gear were operated by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Service and towed to Cartagena for its seal.

The alleged perpetrators were denounced for violations of the regulations of Maritime Fisheries and Merchant Marine.

With this service, the numerous acts of poaching detected in protected areas of the coast and in seabass and seabream farms in the area, as well as the clandestine trade of fish in hospitality establishments in the Region and street sale by nearby towns of Cartagena and the Mar Menor.

The collaboration between SEPRONA and the Directorate General of Fisheries is exceptional and has given fruit to services as relevant and beneficial as this one, for the control of poaching in the Murcian coast as well as the monitoring of the minimum sizes of fish framed within the PACIAP Service Order, developed both in fish auction and road transport markets and in sales markets and restaurants.
