Infrastructure improves the sewerage network by installing automated floodgates in the María Cristina Plaza collector (28/02/2020)

The City Council of Cartagena, through the concessionary company Hidrogea, has made improvements in the water supply service in the sewer collector located in the surroundings of María Cristina square and Jorge Juan street.

The works, which began on Monday, February 24, have lasted five days and have consisted, as reported by the Councilor for Infrastructure, María Casajús, “in the automation of a gate system that exists in that area that regulates sewage water in case of torrential rains.

Specifically, it has gone from a manual gate valve to the placement of two automated gate valves, 1800 and 1500 mm, which will be controlled and operated from the Operations Center of the concessionaire â€.

With an investment of 25,000 euros, Casajús has said that this action “will allow greater capacity to respond to heavy rains without endangering employees who had to operate it manually, avoiding floods and traffic cuts, as well as optimizing the operation of the sewerage network, environmental impacts are minimized, also reducing response times. â€

In addition, the councilor explained that "they will benefit more than 40,000 Cartagena living in the area of Los Dolores, Mediterranean Urbanization, Nueva Cartagena, San Antón, Alameda San Antón and Severo Ochoa", more than 2,100 hectares that transports wastewater and the rain in episodes of rain towards the pumping stations of Severo Ochoa and Plaza de España.

According to the data, the lowest flow reached by the sewer is 500 m³ per hour of sewage and rainwater that is multiplied by 6, reaching 3000 m³ per hour in times of rain.

The maximum reached was in the DANA of September where it reached 6,200 m3 per hour.

The Public Road service of the City Council of Cartagena will restore traffic restrictions on the afternoon of this Friday, February 28, and the Alameda lanes, the closest to the sidewalk of El Corte Inglés, and Jorge Juan that has remained will be opened closed during this week.
