The general director of the Natural Environment Fulgencio Perona and the director of the School of Agricultural Engineers Arantxa Aznar have participated in the introduction of an experimental population center of jara de Cartagena in the surroundings of the Battery of La Chapa, in the Regional Park Calblanque, Monte of the Ashes and Peña del Águila.
This action is part of the Cartagena jara recovery project that since January 2019 is being carried out by the School of Agricultural Engineers of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, with funding from the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the collaboration of the Ministry for Ecological Transition.
The jara of Cartagena is an endangered species that since 2018 has been declared in a critical situation by the Ministry for Ecological Transition, which is why works and projects aimed at recovering the species are considered of general interest.
During 2017, the School of Agricultural Engineers worked on another project supported by the Biodiversity Foundation, of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, and co-financed by the Autonomous Community, in which they successfully introduced 300 copies of Cartagena jara into six population centers located in the Peña del Águila, where the natural population of the species is found.
In this new project, researchers have continued to work for the recovery of the species by reinforcing with 240 individuals of the nuclei created in 2017 and introducing two new experimental nuclei in the Ashes Battery and the La Chapa Battery with 70 and 55 plants, respectively.
Both locations are located outside the scope of the species recovery plan and aim to expand the distribution area of ​​the Cartagena jara.
