Several hundreds of Cartagena farmers and ranchers have moved this Friday to Murcia to participate in the massive demonstration called by the agricultural groups Coag, Asaja and Upa.
A concentration in which the mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the Councilor for Public Safety, Public Road and Celebrations, Juan Pedro Torralba, have also participated, who wanted to show their support for the sector.
"The work of our farmers and ranchers is a source of pride for the entire municipality of Cartagena," said the mayor, who has expressed her support by joining the march that has been developed this morning from the Palace of San Esteban to the headquarters of the Government Delegation in Murcia.
The mayor of the Citizen Movement, Enrique Pérez Abellán and María José Soler also participated in the demonstration.
The mayor, on the other hand, has transmitted her commitment to the agrarian leaders and has assured that the field “is a fundamental pillar of our economyâ€, so “when they are going through difficult times, we must give them our full supportâ€.
"When a decade ago the crisis hit Spain, agriculture saved our region and the Campo de Cartagena as it was a refuge for many workers from other sectors that had sunk," Ana Belén Castejón recalled.
"Now, we can't look the other way and do nothing."
The call for Asaja, Coag and Upa intends to claim, both in the Region and elsewhere in the country, the precarious situation in the sector.
Specifically, farmers' protests focus on the low prices of farm products that barely cover production costs, coupled with uncertainty over tariffs imposed by the United States or Brexit.
