The Reforestation table of the City Council of Cartagena has approved the Reforestation Master Plan for the management and planning of all actions on reforestation and revegetation in the municipality of Cartagena, in coordination between the different groups involved, to make Cartagena a municipality more sustainable
The Councilor for Sustainable City and European Projects, Cristina Mora, explained that “the master plan will serve as a roadmap for all measures and actions aimed at combating climate change and mitigating the increase in temperatures, fulfilling the commitments to reduce 40 percent of CO2 emissions by 2030 ”, according to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda and the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Sustainable Energy.
“It was a commitment of this government of the last Reforestation Board, in November 2019, and in just three months, the draft Plan has been drafted, with the participation of political and social agents through the suggestions provided to enrich the Plan. "
Taking stock of recent years, Mora has insisted that a work framework is essential, a planning not to carry out start-ups that do not give the expected results because they are isolated actions, driven by the best of wills, without the planning and coordination so necessary.
To do this, among the challenges faced by the Master Plan, as Mora has stressed, "there is citizen awareness and involvement as an essential element to give sustainability to the projects carried out."
At the Mesa, the beginning of the catalog of soils that meet the environmental, landscape and socio-economic needs of the municipality of Cartagena has been announced, so the first spaces and environments in which to work have been established.
in what way and with what species, to ensure its viability and to be able to create green belts, protected areas and areas of reforestation and revegetation near the main industries of Cartagena, such as Alumbres, areas around El Llano de El Beal and the Sierra Minera or the Cabezo Ventura.
This cataloging will be presented at an upcoming meeting of the Reforestation Board, scheduled for April 15.
Cristina Mora has said that “for every tree we plant, 15 kilos of CO2 are absorbed per year.
And not only that, but also, we work for our environment, the polluting particles in the environment are filtered, health benefits are provided, shade is given and the temperature is lowered. ”
REFORESTATION PLAN
To choose the locations, from the Master Plan, all climate projection indicators have been taken into account, such as rainfall and temperature, and an analysis of the species of the area has been carried out, through the Regional Flora Catalog Wild Protected.
The land included is the land owned by the municipality or whose management is municipal responsibility.
Within these, the lands that correspond to Free Spaces of the General Urban Planning Plan, or whose use is authorized as a free space by the Department of Urban Planning and are not contemplated as urban gardens or orchards by the City Council of Cartagena.
Also included in this category are independent municipal ownership mountains that are classified as public mountains.
One of the objectives of the plan is to channel the reforestation campaigns of entities, volunteer groups and collaborating companies in environmental actions.
To facilitate participation, the Plan includes a catalog of recommended species for each type of soil and establishes the procedures that entities and companies must follow in order to obtain the necessary authorizations based on the protection needs of the area in which it is to be reforested.
In this sense, the Plan talks about the need to reforest or revegete, in order to fight desertification, against erosion, improve water infiltration in the field, loss of biodiversity and fight against climate change through CO2 fixation.
In addition, to act in abandoned fields of cultivation or new urbanized areas that remain without vegetation, as well as mountains with invasive vegetation and with little vegetation, the conservation of naturalized spaces and a maintenance of the landscape of traditional crops.
Cristina Mora has highlighted the need to enhance spaces through green roofs and vertical gardens, which will also contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint and retain the rainwater that falls to the roofs, relieving sewage, thus turning Cartagena In a more sustainable city.
All this, promoting public awareness and participation in this area, through the social cohesion of the enhancement of municipal heritage through volunteer activities, educational and cultural use, signaling and dissemination of reforested areas, promoting the empowerment and delimitation of trails for sports activities in natural areas a tourism claim and a protection of it.
As an example, through Cartagena Piensa, 1,000 euros have been allocated per quarter for activities with environmental awareness children and the fight against climate change.
"The environment is everyone's responsibility," Mora said.
“From the City Council we want to give the necessary tools to create and conserve green spaces, through the involvement of the citizens and the care of our municipality.
