A team from the Department of Social Services of the City Council yesterday accompanied the volunteers of the Social Emergency Unit (UES) of the Spanish Red Cross in Cartagena, who go out to care for the homeless every day of year two times per week
On this occasion, the councilor of the area, Mercedes García, the head of the homeless service, José Antonio Martínez Meca and the social educator Gema Belchí joined the work of the volunteers.
The UES volunteers regularly develop a series of immediate and concrete actions to provide homeless people and those living in the settlements with urgent coverage in basic aspects such as food, shelter or hygiene.
The user receives food and drink from the Red Cross, sleeping bags, warm clothes, blankets, and a basic hygiene kit.
In addition, volunteers are interested in the health status of the homeless, transferring them to a health center if necessary, providing them with first aid material or medication in those cases where it is required.
Each user is registered by the Red Cross so that they can be tracked and provide progressive social incorporation, accompaniment and emotional assistance.
Belén Jiménez, social worker of the Red Cross Cartagena explains that “we go out every Wednesday and Friday night to locate the homeless in the municipality of Cartagena, to help them at that time, but, mainly, to track them and put them to Your disposal our services.
We always work in full harmony and coordination with the City of Cartagena â€.
The tuning between the City Council and the Red Cross was revealed yesterday during a night in which both institutions showed their willingness to fight against poverty and exclusion.
The president of the Cartagena Red Cross, Andrés Ros, expressed his satisfaction for “the good understanding we have with the council and with the Social Services workers of Cartagena, a very necessary collaboration if we want to get these people out of the unfortunate situation in which they find each other".
Mercedes García thanked the Red Cross for the work for this and other projects that it develops in the city, highlighting the excellent work of the volunteers, since last night it was possible to verify in situ the fruit of the coordinated work of all the entities and Social Services, which is one of the greatest achievements that has been achieved for a few years to respond immediately to the basic needs of these people.
"We are in the good way.
This is the result of the commitment that the city council made four years ago to improve the quality of life and social welfare of the homeless, â€he added.
Andrés Ros, who was accompanied by the Vice President of the Red Cross Cartagena, Susana Figuerola, said he was “very proud of the UES volunteers, people who have their own lives and jobs and that every night, be festive, cold or heat, they leave everything to go out to take care of the homeless.
The volunteers of this unit do not rest and go out in search of the most needy at any time of the year.
The president believes that "the humanitarian work they do is worthy of thanks and recognition."
