The Regional Hemodonation Center served more than 57,000 donors in 2019
The Hemodonación center of Cartagena, with 7,887 donors, registered 6,671 donations last year, of which 1,448 were from new donors, who served the Santa Lucia and Rosell hospitals, as well as Perpetuo Socorro and Virgen de la Caridad.
The Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, visited the Cartagena Hemodonation Center, which is based in the Santa María del Rosell hospital, where he took stock of the activity carried out at the Regional Hemodonation Center that attended throughout 2019 to 57,231 blood donors, of which 6,870 did so for the first time.
In a meeting with the professionals of the center, Villegas explained that "thanks to the solidarity of the donors, 48,280 blood draws were reached in 2019 to meet the needs of blood components in our hospitals."
Although the figures "speak of the solidarity of donors", the counselor insisted that it is "important to continue sensitizing the population to incorporate young people to blood donation, an act that, in short, is a civic responsibility to advance our sanitary system".
The donation rate achieved is the result of assistance to the dependencies that the Regional Hemodonation Center has in the 45 municipalities, as well as the campaigns programmed in companies, schools and various groups.
In this regard, the head of Health stressed the impact of visits to the University of Murcia, the Polytechnic of Cartagena, the Catholic University San Antonio, and secondary schools because "the incorporation of young and healthy people is vital to blood donation. "

Transplants and bone marrow donation
In the Hematology and Medical Oncology unit of the Morales Meseguer hospital, a total of 56 bone marrow transplants were performed in 2019, of which 35 were autologous (autologous transplants) and 21 allogeneic (from a donor compatible with or unrelated to the patient).
Of the latter, three came from family donors and 18 from unrelated.
The Regional Center of Hemodonación actively collaborates with the campaigns to attract bone marrow donors since 1994, which launched the Spanish Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (REDMO).
In total, there are already more than 24,000 people who have registered in REDMO, which makes the Region of Murcia lead, together with the Community of Navarra, the number of bone marrow donors in Spain.
Morales Hematopoietic Progenitor Transplant Unit
The Bone Marrow Transplant Program began in the Region in 1991, at the Morales Meseguer Hospital with the creation of its Hematopoietic Progenitor Transplant Unit of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Service.
Since it was launched, it has reached 1,200 transplants.
This Unit has just received the fourth consecutive audit for accreditation within the JACIE Program, and is currently awaiting receipt of the certificate.
This makes it the first National Transplant Unit with a fourth accreditation, as well as one of the first European to achieve this quality standard.
