History of the medieval monastery of San Ginés de la Jara

The medieval monastery of San Ginés de la Jara and the hermitages of Monte Miral, declared of Cultural Interest of the Region of Murcia (BIC), are located in the Campo de Cartagena, overlooking the Mar Menor and very close to Cabo de Palos and the Mediterranean Sea.

Since ancient times, this privileged enclave has been a true melting pot of life, a fertile and beautiful corner, populated with a great variety of plants and animals, with abundant water and with valuable minerals that have attracted different civilizations.

In the Cabezo de San Ginés is the Victoria Cave with more than a million years, which treasures remains of an abundant fauna, today exotic and disappeared, much of African origin.

The environment of La Jara has also been, for centuries, a place for cultivation, vigilance and even for contemplation and the cult of divinity.

It was Iberian enclave, Roman villa, defensive tower, place of Arab worship, hermit refuge, Augustinian monastery and later Franciscan, destination of pilgrims and always Vergel, an oasis famous for its palm trees, orange flowers and fruit trees.

Today, this monastery continues to demand our help to get out of oblivion, be conveniently restored and valued for its great possibilities for culture, art, archeology, contact with nature and tourism in the Region.
