The accumulation of a large amount of seaweed and oceanic posidonia on the beach of Galúa de La Manga after the passing of the Gloria storm, has caused that the Department of Infrastructure and Coast Area has experimentally implemented a plan of seaweed collection on the shore to protect the sand from temporary futures, with the permits of the Demarcation of Coasts and following the recommendations of the agency that regulates the concession of the blue flags.
The mayor of the Area, María Casajús, has pointed out that “it is the first time that in our municipality we proceed to accumulate the algae on the seashore as a barrier to prevent the erosion of the coast”, since as explained “in low season it is not allowed to remove the posidonia to transfer it to the landfill ”.
With this action, as Casajús has pointed out, “the beach is protected from the possible loss of sand due to temporary futures and the usual maintenance tasks can be continued, as well as, allowing the transit and enjoyment of the beach of neighbors and tourists "
During the works, the municipal operators have carried out cleaning tasks manually to remove plastics and any type of waste that was in the sand.
We must remember the important role of posidonia in protecting the coast and in reducing the consequences of climate change.
The mayor wanted to emphasize that “these works have been done now, because you have to wait a few days, since in many occasions the tides take the seaweed back to the sea.
If this does not happen, as on this occasion, it is cleaned and collected in an area near the sea, as a barrier of protection and for its possible return to the sea ”.
