The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia has developed an investigation aimed at identifying a group of people in Cabo de Palos, who was trying to cheat elderly people, which has resulted in the dismantling of a family-based criminal group and itinerant character, one of whose members has been arrested and three others have been investigated one of them minor as alleged perpetrators of the crimes of theft, fraud and belonging to criminal organization.
The action began last Wednesday, day 22, when the Civil Guard received several calls from citizens who warned of the presence of a group of people, originating in Eastern countries, in the vicinity of a commercial area of ​​Cabo de Palos-Cartagena , asking for money on behalf of an association of deaf people.
The Benemérita deployed citizen security prevention patrols that initiated a survey of the area where they had been seen and that extended to the access and exit communication routes of Cabo de Palos.
As a result of these police devices, the civil guards detected the movement of a tourism that was incorporated at high speed to the AP-7 highway from the Cartagena municipality of Los Belones, so it was intercepted.
The four occupants of the vehicle, whose physical characteristics coincided with those described by the witnesses, were identified, which made it possible to find out that they had a record for crimes against property.
The Civil Guard arrested one of the women who, in addition, was related to the alleged authorship of several thefts in the province of Castellón, with the method known as 'affectionate hug' (1).
The other three individuals, one of them minors, were instructed by the alleged perpetrators of the same criminal typologies: fraud, theft and belonging to a criminal organization.
The examination of the vehicle in which they traveled was positive with the finding of numerous leaflets, in the name of a false organization of deaf and dumb, as they had been described by the citizens.
According to the investigation, it is a criminal group of a family and itinerant nature, based in Elche (Alicante), whose members two women and two men were posing as disabled people to address their victims, mainly people of Advanced age or foreign citizens.
After requesting their economic collaboration for the benefit of a false deaf organization, they surrounded their victims to seize jewels, money, watches or any valuables with the method known as 'loving hug' (1).
The investigation has resulted in the arrest of one woman and the investigation of three other persons, aged between 20 and 34 years, one of them minor, of Romanian nationality and neighbors of Elche (Alicante), as alleged authors of the crimes of theft, fraud and belonging to a criminal organization.
Those arrested, the evidence obtained and the proceedings taken have been made available to the Court of Instruction of the Guard of Cartagena and the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office of Murcia.
The Civil Guard recommends the most sensitive groups, such as elders or foreign citizens, to be alert to this type of situation and flee from any person or group of people who go to them to trick them in the name of false charities, as well as Avoid going alone with valuables in sight.
(1) 'Loving hug' method
It is a criminal method used to address victims with the offer of false forms for the collection of signatures in support of non-existent organizations or charities and even with the offer of sexual favors.
The duration of the episode is usually very short and seeks to create confusion with the intention of placing the victim in a position of surprise and confusion;
and take advantage of that moment to subtract jewels or any other valuable item.
In addition, it is characterized by a careful selection of victims within a certain profile: elderly people, who are at that moment alone and who wear jewelry or valuables in sight.
