Knowledge transfer, scientific and technological dissemination and internationalization have been the keys to the legislature of the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Alejandro Díaz, as he highlighted in his speech during the act of Santo Tomás de Aquino.
The institution will hold elections in March to which it has already announced that it would not be presented.
"Surely whoever happens to me will arrive with renewed energies, ideas and enthusiasm," said the Rector, for whom the "experience of leading and representing the University has been wonderful and transformative, but also exhausting."
The consolidation of the Network of Chairs, the efforts to increase scientific-technical vocations and the opening of new mobility programs and agreements with universities that it has cited in line with the keys of its mandate.
Among its main lines of action at the internal level, the Rector has highlighted the stabilization of staff, the increase in teaching quality and the digitalization of university management.
Alejandro Díaz has pointed out how the UPCT is working to implement degree and master degrees related to the areas that the new Doctor Honoris Causa has indicated in his master lesson as keys for the future: Biomedical Engineering, Data Science and Engineering, Industry 4.0 and BIM technology.
The Rector thanked the new doctors and their thesis directors for their contribution to the UPCT raising 9 positions in the 2019 Ranking of Research of Spanish Public Universities, published last November, currently occupying the 21st position among the 50 public universities in terms of global productivity, 5th place in patents and 7th place in attracting R&D projects.
Regarding the current situation, the Rector has advanced that the new residence will be a reality “with certainty at the end of 2022, although the awardees hope that it will be operational in September 2021†and has considered the separation in two ministries “tragicomic†of the University and Science competences and has called for the modification without delay of Royal Decree 1393 so that universities can incorporate new types of degrees, such as open degrees, dual degrees or integrated programs.
The Rector has closed with this speech the solemn academic act of Santo Tomás de Aquino, in which the Polytechnic University of Cartagena has invested, as every year, with its new doctors and has distinguished students with extraordinary prize end of degree, master and doctorate.
Likewise, eight employees of the institution have been distinguished for serving 25 years of service and four teachers recognized as references in the European Higher Education Area.
The academic act also serves to deliver the UPCT Social Council awards, which this year have renewed their categories, distinguishing researchers, companies and the career as an alumnus director.
In addition, he has been invested Doctor Honoris Causa the researcher Hojjat Adeli, an expert in artificial intelligence.
