Municipal policies should be aimed at promoting a rational use of natural resources, contributing to conserve the environment and meeting present needs without loss for future generations.
In this sense, the Councilor of the municipal group MC Cartagena, Isabel García, has advanced the initiative of her training to "execute an ambitious plan that reduces the use of single-use plastics and gradually eliminate the use of plastic bags and bottles. With these two simple measures we would lay the foundations of where administrations in environmental policy should go, as well as serving as an example to other organizations and entities that could support the measure. "
García, then, said that "we are obliged to exercise pedagogical and awareness work, but that intention must be reflected in facts and the initiative we defend deepens the need to take the first step."
Subsequently, the Councilor of MC Cartagena recalled that "the daily use of single-use plastic has been installed in our lives. According to the UN, every minute one million plastic bottles are bought and, per year, are used 500,000 million bags. The data is devastating but even more so the final destination of these containers. For example, eight million tons end up in the oceans every year. "
The councilwoman from Cartagena has added that "living without plastic is a feasible challenge to achieve. There are reports that warn that avoiding only bags and water bottles (what we propose in our motion) can be eliminated between 70% and 90% of waste. "
To conclude, García has stated that "in this objective we are all a fundamental part. Each one from his sphere and scope of competences. We are convinced that this could be a first step to transfer this way of doing things to neighbors, companies and institutions" .
