They criticize that the City Council of Cartagena does not apply the anti-pollution framework protocol, as it is not mandatory, leaving citizens defenseless against the deterioration of air quality
In Murcia City there have also been improvements although not as high as in the stations of the Campo de Cartagena
Ecologists in Action has denounced before the Cartagena City Council and the General Directorate of the Environment, the strong episode of PM10 particle contamination occurred on Wednesday, January 22, where the Cartagena stations have had daily averages that almost triple the limit value established for this pollutant (50 micrograms / cubic meter) as can be seen in the table:
La Aljorra: 147 micrograms / cubic meter
Mompean: 146 micrograms / cubic meter
Escombreras Valley: 143 micrograms / cubic meter
Altitudes: 132 micrograms / cubic meter

Ecologists in Action criticizes that the City Council of Cartagena does not apply the anti-pollution framework protocol as it is not mandatory, leaving citizens defenseless against the deterioration of air quality.
Similarly, Ecologists in Action has denounced to the City of Murcia that the San Basilio station has also exceeded the daily limit value of particles on January 22 (97 micrograms / m3), together with the Sewer station (61 micrograms / m3).
And remember that the City of Murcia has approved an anti-pollution protocol that is necessary and urgently applied in light of these improvements.
In addition, it is expected that today, Thursday 23, the high levels of PM10 particle contamination throughout the region will continue, as shown by the hourly data of the measuring stations at this time (close to or exceeding 200 micrograms per cubic meter).
They warn that this contamination by particles has to do with Saharan dust intrusions, road traffic emissions and industrial emissions in stable weather conditions.
However, although traffic is the main human source, we must not forget that there are other sources of pollution that contribute to worsen the problem, such as agricultural burns, especially in municipalities such as Murcia, and emissions from industrial estates. They have not stopped these days either.
Chronic exposure to particles has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
Increases in PM10 particles cause a 1% increase in income from all cardiovascular causes. It is estimated that 25% of deaths from lung cancer, 8% of lung diseases (COPD) and 15% of heart disease Ischemic and stroke The environmental organization claims that compliance in an effective way the anti-pollution protocol and avoid discretion in the activation and compliance with the protocol.
Ecologists in Action has been pointing out that the main routes of action to reduce air pollution include: the reduction of road traffic in urban centers and metropolitan areas, reducing the need for mobility with proximity planning and promoting transport in cities public (especially electric) and non-motorized means such as bicycle or pedestrian traffic;
the ecological reconversion of interurban transport from the road to an improved and socially accessible conventional railway;
compliance with the law regarding agricultural burning and waste management;
savings and energy efficiency;
the recovery of stimuli for renewable electricity generation, replacing thermoelectric power plants from fossil fuels, the control and inspection of industrial emissions and the adoption of the best available industrial techniques for pollution reduction.
Also, the increase in air quality is due to the decrease in maritime transport emissions through the creation of an Emission Control Area (ECA) for the Mediterranean Sea that has been agreed to develop at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the Convention Barcelona and an environmental taxation that immediately corrects the favorable treatment granted, for years, to diesel vehicles, which cause 80% of pollutant emissions from urban and interurban traffic.
Ecologists in Action Murcia Region claims to the General Directorate of Environment the development of the draft of the Strategy for the Improvement of Air Quality.
Tropospheric Ozone Improvement Plan.
Region of Murcia 2020-2025 to which the regional government had committed, with quality objectives based on the limit values of the WHO guidelines and a specific plan for tropospheric ozone control.
It also demands that the Ministry of Health carry out reports and epidemiological studies that analyze the impacts on public health derived from industrial and traffic pollution.
