The sports facilities of La Manga Club in Cartagena will be the stage of the knockout stage for a place in the finals of the Tennis Federation Cup, which Spain and Japan will play on February 7 and 8.
The presentation of the event, which will be a double sports and tourism milestone, has taken place this afternoon at the City Hall of Cartagena, with the presence of the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón;
the Minister of Tourism, Youth and Sports, Cristina Sánchez;
the president of the Spanish Tennis Federation, Miguel Díaz, and the general director of La Manga Club, Nick Montgomery.
The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, initiated the act, explaining that women have always played and will continue to play a very important role in this discipline.
The Fed Cup is one of the quintessential female sporting events in Spain, "that is why it is a great pride for Cartagena and a privilege to host this qualifier in the city."
In addition, the mayor has stressed that this event is a great milestone for the entire Cartagena municipality, on the one hand for the tourist promotion that will mean, since the visitors it attracts will be the best ambassadors of the competition, for those who have prepared some packs for leisure time where you can visit the history and architectural beauty of Cartagena.
And on the other hand, for the dissemination of this event through the media, which serves to put Cartagena on sports in the national and international agenda.
Castejón recalled that a Fed Cup was already played in the Manga Club in April 2018, against Paraguay, where Spain won the 3-1 victory, with the participation of Carla Suárez and Garbiñe Muguruza, who expect it to be a great precedent to continue with the wake of luck.
The president of the Spanish Tennis Federation, Miguel Díaz, also spoke about the federation's trajectory, referring to last year, when they rose in Belgium, which meant they were among the 8 best teams in the world.
This year is expected to have a great impact, "I believe that many Japanese will come to visit Cartagena and its surroundings for its great tourist offer."
And he also highlighted La Manga Club as the seat of the Fed Cup with all the comforts and facilities and a great tourist tradition, to host this competition.
As a novelty, Miguel Díaz has said that the competition changed this year, so it has been done in the Davis Cup style with the final phase in Budapest, which will be held in April.
"Hopefully the city of Cartagena means that luck we are going to have."
The general director of La Manga Club, Nick Mongtmonery, pointed out that the facilities of La Manga Club are at the height of this competition with 28 tennis courts, and has expressed his gratitude to the City of Cartagena and the Regional Government for their collaboration.
For its part, the Minister of tourism, Cristina Sánchez, said that if the event is repeated in La Manga, it is because of the extraordinary conditions of the Region, to seasonally and continue with the sport-tourism binomial with the Fed Cup and with all the events they can support throughout the year.
The event was also attended by the president of the Regional Tennis Federation, José Alcolea, and the Councilor for Sports, Diego Ortega, as well as members of Hidrogea and Mapfre, as collaborating organizations and sponsors of the event.
