The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has gathered this week the mayor and coordinators of all the areas involved to address the new Recovery Plan of the Old Town of Cartagena.
The main objective of this plan is to end the urban, economic and social problem that drags the area between the San Francisco square and the Station sector.
The meeting was attended, in addition to the Mayor and Town Councilor for Urban Planning, the Councilor for Infrastructure, María Casajús, the Councilor for Urban Services and Projects, Juan Pedro Torralba, the Councilor and President of the Agency for Local Development and Employment, Irene Ruiz, the mayor of Patrimonio, María Amoraga, the councilor delegate of Social Services, Mercedes García, and the mayor of Tourism, Cristina Pérez, as well as the technicians of each of the competent areas.
“We all agree that the historic center of the municipality needs a deep remodeling, not only for the city center to offer a homogeneous image but also to make it more comfortable for those who live and transit through it.
In today's meeting we have begun to design the strategy to follow to achieve it, â€said the mayor.
It is an ambitious project, whose actions have been arranged in a calendar that includes the four years of the legislature and will begin in the coming months.
The first phase of the plan, which will begin this year 2020, has four priority axes that are:
1. Urbanization and rehabilitation of San Cristóbal la Larga, Saura, San Diego and De la Gloria streets, thus completing the works that began in the area last year with the remodeling of Beatas, Ciprés streets, Villalba Corta street, San Cristóbal Corta, Don Roque and Plaza de Roldán.
2. Provide new equipment in the area with two new infrastructures.
Among them, build a study room of about 100 positions and an incubator of companies, linked to the ecological transition, which will be installed in the premises currently closed at the bus station.
The rehabilitation of the Office of Doors of San José is also planned to move the Department of Tourism.
3. Finish the pedestrian ring that borders the Archeological Park of Molinete from Morería Baja to Adarve street and create a new axis that communicates Morería Baja with San Fernando street.
Start the recovery of Despeñaperros Hill.
4. Review and adaptation of private lots from Serreta street to Gisbert.
It has already begun to contact the owners to proceed with their cleaning and study whether or not there is an intention to build shortly.
They will also be warned that, with current regulations, in the historic centers they have a limited period of time to build or sell.
Analyze the possibility of converting them into new urban recreation areas or orchards, through a temporary transfer, an initiative for which several groups have been interested.
“In all these actions Social Services will play a very important role, since it will be the department responsible for studying on a case-by-case basis the situation in which the people currently residing in the areas affected by this project are located and, in addition, will ensure that This plan serves to increase the number of sheltered, sheltered and rented housing units, â€explained the mayor.
