UPCT students imagine the future Cartagena aquarium in different locations of the municipality (15/01/2020)

The pier of the Port, the neighborhood of Santa Lucia, the Montesacro and some coastal batteries are some of the sites proposed by students of the School of Architecture

The proposals for the placement and architectural projects to create an aquarium in Cartagena developed by students of the subject Projects 8 of the degree in Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) are exposed from today on the ground floor of the CIM.

The rector of the UPCT, Alejandro Díaz, the director of the School of Architecture, Carlos Parra, and the Councilor for Culture of the City of Cartagena, David Martínez, have attended the inauguration, highlighting the transfer of ideas generated by the students of the Polytechnic to the city.

"It is an intellectual exercise that may be of interest to municipal architects," explained the rector.

"From the City Council we always want to have the UPCT to profile future projects", added the mayor.

The fifth year students of the Architecture degree have located the aquarium in different locations in the city of Cartagena, such as the port pier, the Santa Lucía neighborhood or the slopes of Montesacro and El Molinete, using the facility to regenerate the urban space, and also in disused coast batteries.

The academic year has been based on the requirements that an aquarium in Cartagena would need according to the program developed by the College of Biologists of the Region of Murcia, which contemplates that the future infrastructure is also a research and conservation center for native species from the coast of Cartagena and the Mar Menor.

In this regard, the councilor said that the aquarium could be used to recover species disappeared by the environmental degradation of the salt lagoon.

"The aquarium has been considered as the combination of a scientific, educational and recreational center that aimed to focus on researching, preserving and displaying marine fauna and flora related to the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean.
