Cartagena will host the next congress of the International Association for Ancient Mural Painting (13/12/2019)

At the plenary meeting of the International Association for Ancient Mural Painting (AIPMA), held last September 12, the city of Cartagena was unanimously designated as the headquarters of the congress organized by the Association every three years.

The meeting was held within the framework of the AIPMA XIV Congress, which took place in the Italian city of Naples, between September 10 and 14.

Under the title of 'Painted walls.

From the excavation to the musealization ', it presented some of the most outstanding interventions of value and socialization of traces of Roman mural painting undertaken in recent years throughout Europe.

The congress was invited by the team of archaeologists working in the Barrio del Foro Romano, the Molinete Archaeological Park (José Miguel Noguera, María José Madrid, Izaskun Martínez and Víctor Velasco), in order to publicize the results of the archaeological works made in recent years in the Atrium Building, where a huge amount of Roman wall painting has been recovered.

These vestiges have been studied, restored and exhibited in the Building itself, located in the Barrio del Foro Romano.

In addition, in Cartagena important research and heritage recovery works of Roman mural painting have been carried out in the last two decades, such as those undertaken in the so-called Casa de la Fortuna.

With these precedents, the professor of the University of Murcia, Alicia Fernández Díaz, a specialist in Roman mural painting, presented the candidacy of Cartagena to host the headquarters of the AIPMA congress in 2022. The proposal was approved unanimously and the assistants They praised the work done at the Windlass and argued that Cartagena has become "an international benchmark in the field of Classical Aqueology and the management and musealization of its rich archaeological heritage."

The International Association for Ancient Mural Painting (AIMPA) was founded in Cologne in September 1989 by a group of researchers of different nationalities.

Its purpose was to promote the coordination of scientific research in the field of ancient wall painting, favoring contact between researchers and institutions.

It currently has partners from 20 different countries.

The Association organizes international conferences every three years, which to date have been held, among other places, in Lausanne (2016), Athens (2013), Ephesus (2010), Napóles (2007) and Zaragoza (2004).

It is expected that the Cartagena Congress will be able to attend around 150 experts in ancient wall painting from all nationalities represented in the Association.

The Barrio del Foro Romano will have a special role, to which the possibility of showing the attendees the new Museum of the Roman Forum will contribute.
