The winners of the XI edition of the Voluntary Commitment Awards are already known (11/12/2019)

The City Council of Cartagena has announced the winners of the awards of the XI edition of the Voluntary Commitment.

The winners have been unanimously approved by the Prize Valuation Commission, chaired by the Vice Mayor and Councilor for Social Welfare, Noelia Arroyo, and composed of technicians from the Department of Social Services, Education, Youth, Culture, Equality and Sports.

The winners were announced last week by the Vice President of the Commission and Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes Garcia.

The awards ceremony will take place this Monday, December 16, at 7:00 p.m., in the Cartagena Culture Classroom of CAM Foundation, on Calle Mayor.

In the individual modality, the prize has been awarded to Manuel Roig Serrano.

Dr. Roig, as he is popularly known, is an impeccable example both for his professional career as an internist, to which he has worked for more than forty years, as well as for his work as a volunteer in the Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor of Cartagena, a totally altruistic commitment acquired almost twenty years ago.

His volunteer work during all this time has consisted of health care for the elderly residents, being a reference for all of them both of good professional and especially human doing.

Given the long journey and the great social contribution of the candidates who have submitted to this XI Edition, the Commission responsible for the resolution of the Awards also considered granting Special Mention in the individual modality to Isabel León Jurado, who has dedicated a large part from his life to work with people in situations of exclusion, both in Spain and in South America.

His career as a volunteer has already been developed for about ten years at the NGO ACCEM, where he collaborates giving literacy classes to migrant adults.

In its collective modality, the prize has fallen to the social project developed by the Mundi Teachers Association, an entity established in 2002. The Association carries out four projects in our municipality: 'Coaching Project', 'Talentun', 'Heroes without cape' and 'Educational and social space for children and families'.

All these projects, under different lines, are mainly aimed at minors and families in vulnerable situations, with the aim of strengthening their own individual and social capacities and competences.

The promotion and involvement of volunteers, especially youth in their development, is their most unique feature.
