The journalist and writer Marta Peirano presents in Cartagena Think ´The enemy knows the system´ (02/12/2019)

This Wednesday, December 4, the Cartagena Piensa program of the Department of Culture hosts the presentation of 'The enemy knows the system.

Manipulation of ideas, people and influences after the attention economy '(Editorial Debate, 2019) by the journalist and writer Marta Peirano, at 8:00 p.m. at the Josefina Soria del Luzzy Library.

It will be presented by Gabriel Navarro, member of the Cartagena Piensa promoter team, and Elisa Reche, director in Murcia of eldiario.es.

This essay tries to explain how the Internet and the digitalization of society, far from being tools of democratization, are a surveillance and manipulation machine almost without us noticing.

And that surveillance could be used in a crisis to decide who has the right to be in a place or to exist.

In the current era of information, power structures have become invisible, underground.

The geopolitical power that the state once held is now concentrated in the hands of communication networks.

Indeed, Google and Facebook already know more about you than the police.

If these two information giants have been strengthening ties with China for years, it is because it is the territory where they have more users and, however much it is an openly totalitarian country, both companies are willing to support it.

When it comes to optimizing productivity, the border between the ethical and the immoral is blurred.

This and other topics are addressed by journalist Marta Peirano in this book, as well as the control and destruction of democratic processes, the era of the present shock, the mutations in the social structure, the power of algorithms or the militarization of public space.

In the author's words, according to an interview in Public (6/14/2019), "... there are new 'layers' that emerged after the outbreak of the 'internet bubble' at the beginning of the century - in the form of applications -, and that they quickly established an economic model based on the concentration of a lot of traffic data on servers. "Hence the economic model that clearly dominates our relationship with the web: it is the platform capitalism or the attention economy, which has become the capitalism of vigilance. "

Marta Peirano is a journalist.

He founded the sections of DNA Culture and eldiario.es, where he has been head of Culture and Technology and attached to the director.

She has been co-director of Copyfight and co-founder of Hack Hackers Berlin and Cryptoparty Berlin.

He has written books on automatons, notation systems and an essay on surveillance and cryptography called The Little Red Book of the Network Activist, with a preface by Edward Snowden.
