Education and Social Services come together for social cohesion and cultural diversity (18/11/2019)

The diversity in our environment, interculturality, the approach to other cultures and traditions, Islamophobia, human rights, solidarity, rumorology, the fight against discrimination or sustainability will be some of the issues addressed in schools and institutes course 2019-2020 within the program 'An Open School to Other Cultures'.

The details of the new edition of the program have been offered on the morning of November 18 by the Councilor for Education, Irene Ruiz and by the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García.

"In recent decades, Cartagena society has undergone a very important transformation and change as a result of the phenomenon of immigration" said the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes Garcia, who said that "currently the human landscape of our cities It is of various colors and shows a diversity that enriches us all and allows us to open our minds to other worlds and ideas. ”

One of the instruments for this work for social cohesion is the program 'An Open School to Other Cultures', a socio-educational action for the promotion of education and coexistence whose purpose is to contribute to the development of an intercultural awareness in educational communities, promoting For this, knowledge of different cultures, respect for diversity and enrichment through intercultural dialogue, and which aims to transcend the classroom and reach everyone, allowing the transfer of their values ​​and thus consolidate a diverse society model.

The program is developed through a Cooperation Agreement between the City of Cartagena, which involves the Department of Social Services and Education, and social action entities Murcia Acoge, Accem, Cepaim Foundation, Columbares, Rascasa, Angel Solidarity Initiative Foundation Tomás and the Association Bahái Community of Cartagena.

In which intercultural activities are offered and carried out in the educational centers that request it through a team of different professionals and technicians.

It is a consolidated program and example of a model of collaboration between municipal services and the Third Sector, thus giving input to the experience and creativity that its entities offer to integrative work, which is the purpose of An Open School to Other Cultures.

Its objectives include promoting the implementation of intercultural projects in schools, with the involvement of all levels of the educational community (students, parents, teachers, etc.), and leading to a better understanding of customs, culture, language, thinking and values ​​of student diversity, as well as promoting equal opportunities, reducing social, cultural, ethnic and gender discrimination.

It is, therefore, a work of marked preventive nature.

García explained that "one of the factors that influences social cohesion is Education."

Jardines Infant School, San Cristóbal, Vicente Medina, Stella Maris, Miguel de Cervantes, Virginia Pérez, Cuatro Santos, Mastia and the Jiménez de la Espada, Mediterranean, Isaac Peral, El Bohío, San Isidoro and Juan Sebastián Elcano schools will be the colleges and institutes that will participate in this course in the program 'An Open School to Other Cultures'.

The mayor of Education, Irene Ruiz, said that students and teachers will be offered 30 teaching units adapted to different levels by the Department on “diversity in our environment, interculturality, approach to other cultures and traditions , respect, tolerance, solidarity, rumorology, the fight against discrimination, sustainability, human rights, awareness and knowledge of the migratory event, stereotypes, prejudices, Islamophobia and the promotion of involvement for the improvement of society ”.

VALUATION OF THE 2018-2019 PROGRAM

Ruiz said that “last year 2018-19, 14 educational centers participated in the program: 7 Primary Education and 7 Secondary Education and a total of 48 teaching units were programmed, through 231 sessions taught, reaching 4,152 students and 215 teachers. ”
