Cartagena has joined the celebration of Diabetes Day this Thursday, November 14.
Diabetes is a chronic and irreversible disease of metabolism in which there is an excess of glucose or sugar in the blood and urine and affects almost 200,000 people in the Region of Murcia.
In the port city, 30,000 people suffer from it, of which 13,000 are unaware.
On the occasion of this day, hundreds of students and teachers from numerous schools in the municipality participated in the IX United Solidarity March for Diabetes, organized by the Diabetes Society of Cartagena and SODICAR Region, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services of the City Council of Cartagena, in which they have claimed the prevention and awareness of this disease.
The students and teachers have collected their bibs in the Town Hall Square, where the start of the march took place.
The exit of this has had the vice mayor and Councilor for Social Welfare, Noelia Arroyo, the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, the president of SODICAR, María Dolores García and the councilors of the municipal corporation, Isabel García, María José Soler , Arantxa Pérez, Gonzalo Abad and Aurelia García.
The vice mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, said that this activity "gives visibility to Diabetes" and explained that "sport and research are very important for the prevention of this disease."
The participants of the march have traveled the main streets and squares of the city such as Calle Mayor, Puertas de Murcia, Carmen, Plaza de España, Paseo Alfonso XIII, until reaching the Regional Assembly, where the reading of the manifesto took place.
In addition to the Regional Assembly, numerous monuments and city buildings such as the Port Authority, the Santa Lucia Hospital, the Isaac Peral Submarine fountain, the Andreo Clinic and the Roman Forum Neighborhood will be illuminated throughout the day.
The reading of the manifesto has also had the second deputy mayor, Manuel Padín, and the president of the Regional Assembly, Alberto Castillo.
The president of SODICAR, María Dolores García, who has been in charge of reading the manifesto, said that "this year we claim the role of families in the management, care, prevention and education of Diabetes."
He has also called for “greater education and training of patients and professionals, greater materials and medical treatments, new approaches for communication between the patient and doctor, greater health equity, non-discrimination at work, non-discrimination of students with diabetes or research support â€.
After reading the manifesto, the magic show of the magician Abel has taken place, which has closed the celebration of Diabetes Day.
This commemoration has been added to the activities scheduled at the XVIII Diabetes Week in Cartagena, including conferences, healthy routes, free retinographies or a family meal together.
