This Sunday, November 17, the Port of Cartagena will be the scene of a live exhibition in which 30 carriages of several centuries old, coming from different areas of Spain, will participate for the celebration of the III National Contest of Tradition Hooks of Cartagena.
150 people and 50 horses will be in the port city to measure their qualities and preserve a means of transport widely used in past centuries.
The Department of Sports, Tourism and Celebrations of the City of Cartagena collaborate in this event organized by the Club of Enganches de Cartagena Cultural Association Auriga.
The Councilor delegate of Sports of Cartagena, Diego Ortega, has presented the event with the president of the Club of Enganches de Cartagena and organizer of the contest, Juanma Pagán.
The mayor delegate of Sports, Diego Ortega, said that this competition is “a way to bring to the present the past of our land, of our traditions, of our Field of Cartagena.
From now on, no one conceives life without a car, but there was a time where these types of vehicles were those that existed to go to the sites.
That is linked to the DNA of the Cartagena, and therefore also the institutional support for these types of events that bring to the present the past of our land and our people. ”
This idea has also been defended by the organizer of the contest and president of the Club de Enganches de Cartagena Asociación Auriga, Juanma Pagán.
The idea, he commented, is to "rescue a heritage that is in disuse, and in this way we recover carriages with a lot of history, with 100 or 200 years perfectly restored by their owners."
He also stressed that the influx of participants has doubled in just three years.
"We started with 15 inscribed carriages, and this year we are already in our thirties."
The contest consists of two parts.
The first will begin at 11 am on the Paseo del Puerto de Cartagena, where the carriages will stand to appear before the jury, which will have to score: the overall view, the horse, the trimmings it carries, the dress of the passengers and Footmen and carriage.
After this presentation phase, the contest moves to Cuesta del Batel, where all the carriages will arrive, which will compete in different sections.
One of the competitions will be on typical cars of the Campo de Cartagena.
The III National Tradition Engagement Contest of Cartagena has the support of the Royal Enganches Club of Andalusia, which the event organizer considers the largest reference in Spain in this area.
It also has the support of Lorca, Elche and Murcia hitch clubs.
The 150 people who will come from different areas of Spain will have a series of activities on Saturday, November 16, such as guided tours through the city of Cartagena and a gala dinner.
The head of this III National Contest of Tradition Hooks of Cartagena and president of the Enganches Club of Cartagena Asociación Auriga, Juanma Pagán, hopes that this event will be “a reference in the equestrian and cultural world of Cartagena”.
In this edition there will also be a photo contest for those interested in capturing snapshots of the competition.
