The rector of the UPCT ensures that the teaching institution will continue working to improve teaching quality, innovation and technology transfer in the coming years
The rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, assured during the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the teaching institution that these two decades the UPCT has been committed to the "training of professionals and the generation of knowledge through research and its transfer to society. "
He explained that this is the reason why the act of celebration has revolved around the formative and transfer functions, "to the two transformative elements that we pour into society: human capital and knowledge. In short, around our students, their professional future and the necessary connection with the company to facilitate their employability and improve its competitiveness. "
With this act, the Rector has continued, the cycle of celebrations for the act of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the UPCT, which was established on August 3, 1998, date on which the Regional Assembly of Murcia unanimously approved the Law of Creation of the Polytechnic University.
The rector has recognized the work of students who have passed through the UPCT classrooms.
"The student is the main object of the university and its success is its success," he said, highlighting the employability of the degrees taught in it.
"Our employability studies indicate residual unemployment in the vast majority of our titles, and this employment is located in Cartagena at 36%, 44% in the rest of the Region of Murcia, 16% in the rest of Spain, and 4% abroad, "he said.
The 59 students with the best academic record during the 20 years of the UPCT have received a diploma and a commemorative method, apart from the card of the newly constituted Association of Alumni of the UPCT.
"We want you to be the first to have them, to take advantage of the advantages of belonging to the Association and to have that permanent connection with your university. Connection that will allow you to be informed of all the activities that we develop, those of cultural dissemination, sports or volunteering , but especially those of permanent formation, "Díaz Morcillo said.
Likewise, he has recognized the work carried out by the Confederation of Business Organizations of Cartagena (COEC), whose institution has been awarded the UPCT Gold Medal, the highest award granted by the University.
"It was fair to thank with this medal the important role of the businessmen of Cartagena, through COEC, in the political decision that, saving not a few obstacles, allowed the creation of the Polytechnic University," he said, naming businessmen like Manuel Pérez of Lema or Ginés Huertas.
During his speech he also had words of thanks to the University staff.
"Many thanks to the almost 1000 people who, together with our students, form the Polytechnic University of the Region of Murcia. Your dedication to the university in teaching, research or management has allowed the UPCT to be a solvent, respected institution and admired by the citizens of the Region of Murcia, and a reference for attracting talent and knowledge of companies. "
On the other hand, he said that the UPCT is already preparing for the next 20 years and of which he predicts that they will be developed "in a simple environment."
In that sense, he pointed out that there is a "strong competition" for the attraction of students and researchers, apart from the fact that efforts will be focused on the internationalization of the university and, in particular, on the participation in European consortia of universities, " that will allow progress towards teaching and research excellence. "
Besides, he pointed out that the university will work to have a greater connection with the company, which "enables significant improvements in the employability of our students and in the transfer of innovative knowledge. In this regard I sincerely believe that we are well positioned, but the margin for improvement it's very wide. "
In turn, he added that the university will be the "tool to solve or at least mitigate the main problems of humanity and the planet, with that horizon within 10 years that marks the 2030 Agenda and its sustainable development goals."
However, Díaz Morcillo has stressed that despite this "complex context", the UPCT will pursue with its activities "an international prestige that makes it possible to fulfill the mission already present in the law of creation of our university, which is to provide a instrument that serves to favor innovation, assimilation and transfer of technology to the companies of the Region and to improve the quality of teaching of the higher education existing in Cartagena, basically aimed at training effective professionals ".
