UPCT BIM courses specialize engineers and architects in 3D digitalization and virtual reality (26/10/2019)

The Polytechnic receives a great interest for its own title in the methodology that integrates all the technical and economic information together with the three-dimensional modeling of public works

More than 40 civil engineers and architects have remained on the waiting list to pursue their own degree from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) on BIM methodology, a constructive information model that integrates and centralizes in a single project the geometric information, the temporary planning, expected costs, environmental impact and maintenance of civil works.

"The integration of the BIM Methodology in the procedures of design, construction and exploitation of civil and building works is an indisputable reality for companies and professionals both in the national and international market, and offers a full panorama of job opportunities for professionals who are acquiring knowledge in this methodology, "says the director of the title, José Manuel Olmos Noguera.

"In the medium term it is expected that all projects that are tendered with the different Spanish public administrations will be elaborated with this methodology," adds the professor of the Department of Mining and Civil Engineering of the UPCT.

In one of the sessions of the first of the seven courses that make up this degree of specialization, students have discovered the potential of virtual reality as one of the uses of the BIM methodology in civil engineering.

BIM projects allow you to see in the digital layout of the work all the technical and budgetary information, including the timing of its execution, the materials that will be used, the detailed plans, safety regulations or energy certification, for example.

The students of the degree will learn to use this methodology in works of all kinds, including roads and bridges.

"The title of University Specialist in BIM Methodology in Civil Engineering aims to show the need, advantages and uses of these techniques to students and professionals in the world of construction, as well as to publicize the capacity of certain computer tools in the design of works civilians, "says Antonio Vigueras, director of the School of Roads and Mines that has promoted the course.

Each of the modules of the degree can be taken independently to the degree of University Specialist, thus offering 7 BIM courses with specific themes.

The full degree consists of 310 hours of training and is taught on Friday afternoons and Saturdays in a computer room at the UPCT.
