A student of Industrial Electronics and Automation Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) has developed a system that allows the rehabilitator or physiotherapist to perform the exercises with his patient remotely through an exoskeleton.
Jesús Blasco, a student from San Pedro del Pinatar, has achieved in his Final Project, that the exoskeleton developed in the European Exo-legs project, can receive orders from the rehabilitator remotely and reproduce the movements in the patient's legs.
The robotic device moves the hip, knees and ankles of the patient, allowing him to improve his mobility throughout the rehabilitation process, explain the directors of the Work Nieves Pavón and Jorge Feliú, of the area of Systems Engineering and Automation of the UPCT .
This articulated robot makes it easier for patients to be treated more efficiently, according to Pavón and Feliú, "since the physical presence of the rehabilitator is not necessary."
The system captures the movement of the physiotherapist through a typical video game sensor, type Kinect, sends it through the Internet and reproduces it on the patient's legs.
The initial prototype tests of this rehabilitation system have been carried out in the laboratory of the Neurocor group (Neurology, Control and Robotics), led by Professor José Manuel Cano.
The work began in February 2019 and has obtained the highest rating: outstanding 10 and is eligible for honors.
The student is enrolled in the Master of Industrial Engineering and plans to continue improving the prototype of the system in the Department of Automation, Electrical Engineering and Electronic Technology, in a new line of research that combines robotics and telemedicine.
Jesús Blasco has studied with a scholarship of excellence of the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar from the Baccalaureate.
Teachers have used the prototype of the Exoskeleton Legs for Elderly Persons - Exo-legs- (AAL-010000-2012-15) project, which was led by Professor Juan López Coronado and ended in 2015. The idea is to continue developing functions of this exoskeleton with Industrial School students add.
