This Tuesday, October 22, the Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena has hosted the signing of the protocol to present the candidacy of Cartagena as a World Heritage City by UNESCO.
The mayor Ana Belén Castejón and the president of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia Fernando López Miras have signed the document.
The event was attended by the Vice Mayor of Cartagena Noelia Arroyo, the second deputy mayor Manuel Padín, the Councilor for Tourism Cristina Pérez, the Minister of Tourism Cristina Sánchez, the director of the Tourism Institute of the Region of Murcia Francisco Bernabé, the president of COEC Pedro Pablo Hernández and that of HOSTECAR Juan José López, as well as the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena Alejandro Díaz, the president of the Federation of Troops and Legions of Carthaginians and Romans José Antonio Meca and the admiral head of Arsenal from Cartagena Aniceto Rosique, as well as the director of the Roman Theater Museum of Cartagena Elena Ruiz Valderas.
Cartagena Mayor Ana Belén Castejón is confident that the port city will join the 48 Spanish cities that have already been recognized as World Heritage by UNESCO.
Castejón believes that Cartagena meets 3 conditions to receive this distinction: its natural heritage, its archeological legacy and its historical imprint, which have left various civilizations during the 3,000-year-old port city.
According to the mayor, "it would be an honor and a great responsibility" to access this list of Spanish cities recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The first mayor of Cartagena states that the appointment as a World Heritage City would entail different responsibilities for the municipality, such as the maintenance of the historic center and the archaeological heritage.
Ana Belén Castejón also says that if the distinction were made, Cartagena would have access to financial aid for tourism projects.
The president of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia Fernando López Miras has announced that on Friday the order to initiate the file was carried out by the regional executive to begin the process that allows the appointment of Cartagena World Heritage Site.
In addition, he said that in the coming weeks the headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism of the Region of Murcia will be transferred to Cartagena.
