The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with inspectors of the Ministry of Health of the CARM, has developed an operation that has resulted in the investigation of a pharmacist from the municipality of Cartagena who has been instructed as alleged author of crime against public health, for distributing medications without the mandatory authorization.
The actions began when inspectors of the Service of Pharmaceutical Planning and Attention of the General Directorate of Planning, Research, Pharmacy and Citizen Services affected by the Ministry of Health of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM), while conducting a series Routine controls in pharmacies in the municipality of Cartagena, found that in one of the inspected establishments more than a hundred units of 10 ml had been dispensed each dose of a general injectable anesthetic product whose active substance is ketamine.
It is a veterinary or medical drug that needs a prescription from a physician to be dispensed in a pharmacy.
The inspectors reported the alleged criminal acts to members of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA), who initiated the investigation in order to clarify them.
During the operation, the Civil Guard has taken demonstration to more than a dozen people related to the events, which allowed to verify that this product was used by veterinary doctors as an anesthetic to perform surgical interventions, although it is not commonly used in treatments, since there are other more effective drugs.
The Civil Guard continued the investigation throughout the region in order to determine if there was any other establishment that had distributed the product.
After the inspection of about twenty pharmacies, it was found that in some they did not know him, since he did not appear in his database as a frequent product, and in others they knew him but had never dispensed him.
The operation has culminated in the investigation of the person in charge of a pharmacy, who has been instructed as alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health, and the drugs related to the investigation have also been seized.
Drug of abuse
The highlight of this product, and specifically its active ingredient: ketamine, is that in the black market it is usually used as a drug to neutralize the will of the victim, since it affects the chemical submission of every person to whom supplies you involuntarily, whether to commit abuse or theft.
The investigated, the effects seized and the proceedings taken have been made available to the competent judicial authority.
