The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has proposed to the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, the creation of the figure of the Commissioner for the Mar Menor, as was done after the catastrophe caused by the earthquakes in Lorca.
The Commissioner is appointed by the Council of Ministers, with the rank of secretary of state and with the mission of promoting, coordinating, monitoring and proposing to the central government the actions to be carried out, in this case, in the Mar Menor.
“I consider that the situation of our salty lagoon is important enough for the Council of Ministers to create this figure, which would coordinate all the actions that the different administrations carry out in the Mar Menor, thus saving any bureaucratic work that could undermine the immediate decision making to reverse this situation, ”he said.
The mayor has made these statements after the work meeting held by the seven mayors of the Region of Cartagena with Minister Teresa Ribera at the Oceanographic San Pedro del Pinatar.
Also, Castejón has again requested an investment calendar to tackle the problem of the Mar Menor and ensure its survival.
"If we know what needs to be done and how to do it, let's all get to work with calendar and budget."
The mayor has reiterated the request she made in April 2018 at the Special Commission of the Mar Menor in the Regional Assembly of the need to “launch a special comprehensive plan for the salt lagoon, since its survival is already a problem of State".
Ana Belén Castejón has highlighted the good predisposition that the Government of Spain is demonstrating to carry out the investments that are within its competence in the framework of the actions required by the Mar Menor
