The day of this Tuesday, October 1, was carried out by the elderly with activities promoted by the Department of Social Services of the City of Cartagena together with neighborhood associations and social entities, on the occasion of the International Day of the Elderly.
After the visit of the area councilor, Mercedes García, to the nursing home of the Little Sisters of the Poor, where the walkers of the Senda Senior association began their school year activities with an intergenerational solidarity march.
Cartagena wanted to pay tribute to those who have become centenarians in this last year and that is why visits were also made to the Los Jazmines residences in La Aparecida and Orpea, where a decoration and a bouquet of flowers were delivered to the three who were there, Josefa Ortuño, Victoriano Méndez and Pilar Galeci.
The events continued during the afternoon with the reading of a manifesto at the main gate of the Consistorial Palace at 5pm by the Federation of Elders with its vice president, Fermina Lorente, where the mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, and vice mayor also intervened, Noelia Arroyo, along with the second deputy mayor, Manuel Padín, the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, the Councilor for Heritage, María Amoraga, and the mayor of the corporation, Jesús Giménez, Enrique Pérez, Arantxa Pérez and Gonzalo Abad.
Afterwards, all of them, who were also joined by the mayor Aurelia García, moved to the Classroom of Culture of the Caja Mediterráneo Social Work, where they followed the tributes by the mayor, vice mayor and mayor of Social Services to the centenarians Avelina García Rodríguez, Josefa Pérez Gómez and María Navarro Cervantes with plaques and bouquets of flowers, as well as all those who collaborate in the Senior Unit of the Department of Social Services.
The Senda Senior group also had a special mention for its great activity and initiatives throughout the year promoting mobility and sport among our elders, along with the performance of the Coral 'A son de Mar', which put the ceremony to a close .
