Cartagena celebrates this Tuesday, October 1, the International Day of the Elderly with various activities organized by the Department of Social Services of the City of Cartagena, in collaboration with various neighborhood associations and social entities.
The Organization of the United Nations (UN) has promoted since 1991 the celebration of this day with the aim of promoting public policies and programs focused on the elderly so that they remain much longer active within society.
In recent years, UN member countries have realized that the population of elderly people has been increasing and by 2050, this will exceed that of children.
Therefore, governments are promoting social policies and programs to improve the quality of life of the elderly.
Cartagena has joined the events that have started this morning with the visit of the Councilor for Social Services, Mercedes García, to the Nursing Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor with the Senda Senior Hiking Association.
The latter have started the course with an intergenerational solidarity march, which has begun at 9 am, from the Church of San Fulgencio, together with the students of ISEN.
The mayor of Social Services, Mercedes García, explained that both the Senda Senior Trekking Association and the students of ISEN have delivered to the asylum "food and cleaning products they need."
After this meeting, Mercedes García has visited Josefa Ortuño Rosique, a woman who has turned 100 this year and is living in the Los Jazmines Residence, in La Aparecida.
After this visit, the Councilor for Social Services along with the Vice Mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, congratulated Victoriano Méndez Ros and Pilar Galeci Sueira, two centenarians of the Orpea Residence, in Cartagena.
The elderly have received a bouquet of flowers and a plaque from the City Council of Cartagena.
This afternoon will take place the reading of the manifesto at 5 pm, at the main gate of the City Hall, with the assistance of both together with the Federation of the Elderly.
It will be followed by an act of homage to the elderly at 5:30 p.m., in the Cultural Center of the Caja Mediterráneo Social Work, with a tribute to the centenarians of the city and another to the elderly who collaborate in the Unit of elders of the Department of Social Services, along with a special mention to the Senda Senior hiker group and the performance of the Coral 'A son de Mar'.
