The rector of the UPCT demands a powerful contract-program based on accountability based on strategic objectives of interest to the Region Reach the countries of our environment in the levels of investment in R&D, approve a new Law of Universities and promote a greater relationship of the university with its surroundings, especially with the company.
These are the three fundamental actions demanded by the rector of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT), Alejandro Díaz Morcillo, to give a corrective impulse to the university system and the science and technology system.
In relation to the Financing Plan of public universities in the Region, Díaz has shown its commitment to the work and effort of the university community.
"Universities want to win, deserve the financial support of our society," he said.
The Rector has claimed «a powerful contract - program based on the accountability of universities based on strategic objectives of interest to the Region».
At the same time, he has requested that the level of investment in new infrastructure and maintenance of these existing before the crisis be recovered.
The leader of the Polytechnic has said that he recognizes "the difficulty in matching income and expenses in the difficult situation of the regional treasury, but investment in university education returns to the State in the form of taxes multiplied by a factor of 6".
Díaz Morcillo highlighted during his speech that Spanish researchers are developing very high level science in more precarious conditions than those of their European or North American colleagues.
As an example, he has cited the professor of the University of Murcia Pablo Artal, national research prize and author of the master lesson of this course.
Díaz argues that to attract talent it is necessary to have means.
According to the Rector: "As long as Spanish science does not have investment levels, public and private, similar to those of the surrounding countries, we will be in inferior conditions for the development of excellent science."
During his speech, Díaz Morcillo also referred to the need for a greater relationship between the university and its environment and has launched as priority objectives: employability, internationalization, research and knowledge transfer in the face of humanity's great challenges, University social responsibility as well as the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
