During this week, the Local Police of the City Council of Cartagena carries out a special campaign for surveillance and control of safety belts and child restraint systems, in collaboration with the General Traffic Directorate.
With this campaign, which will be deployed until October 6 in various parts of the city and coinciding with the start of the school year, it is intended to raise awareness among all drivers and companions that the seat belt is a basic and fundamental element of the road safety and halves the risk of death in the event of an accident.
Not wearing a seat belt is, along with speed and driving under the influence of alcohol, one of the main risk factors on the road.
Although the use of the seat belt has increased, there are still serious gaps.
This is hardly understandable if we consider the relationship between simplicity of use and its effectiveness, since it reduces the risk of death in half in case of an accident.
In recent years there has been a stable trend of 25% of fatalities in traffic accidents who did not use the belt or SRI with respect to the total registered.
The occupants of a vehicle travel at the same speed as said vehicle and in case of braking, the vehicle stops, but the occupants move.
A collision at 50 km / h is equivalent to falling from a second floor.
Not using the belt in the rear seats is a great risk.
In a frontal impact, the probability that an occupant of the rear seats mortally hits another passenger of the front seats can be up to 8 times higher.
The use of approved child restraint systems (SRIs) and seatbelts has been demonstrated as the simplest, most profitable and effective road safety system, in all types of roads and paths.
