The UPCT Racing Team presents its new combustion car, which goes from 0 to 100 in 3.2 seconds (30/09/2019)

The UPCT Racing Team competition team of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena presented today to the students of the School of Industrialists its new car, with which they competed in August in Montmeló improving their previous results.

The racing car prototype developed this year by UPCT students is combustion and goes from 0 to 100 in 3.2 seconds, although “speed is not essential in the Formula Student competition, where we have to spend other many tests to validate the reliability, robustness and dexterity of the car â€, explains the team's Electronics coordinator, Pablo López, pointing out that in the last Spanish test of this international competition the UPCT car passed more tests than in 2018 and achieving the 27th position among the hundred participants.

Employability Plus

Students of the Polytechnic who design and assemble a new competition vehicle every year offer a fortnight of seats to expand their staff of future engineers, especially looking for students of Electrical Engineering and Electronic Engineering to develop in 2020 a new electric car, of great complexity because "it requires developing the battery box from scratch and complying with strict safety regulations," explains López, who has spent three years in the team "learning a lot solving practical problems on the go."

"It is a very beautiful experience and allows you to know the real manufacturing possibilities of the industry, which is a great advantage when looking for a job," adds this veteran team member.

“The team is a training school, in which the most experienced members teach and transfer responsibilities to the new ones, and a shuttle to the companies,†confirms the new 'team leader', Constantino del Toro.

“Having to make a new vehicle every year forces us to go against the clock and think about the project as a whole, not only in the part that you play, as in the company,†explains the Mechanical Engineering student Jesus Javier Sánchez, who made the leap into the world of work thanks to the contact with companies that implies participation in the UPCT competition teams.

“I contacted Sinergia to provide us with fiberglass to manufacture the body of our car and they offered me to do internships in the company.

When the academic year ended, they hired me, â€he recalls.

Students can join this competition team from the first year.

When they arrive at the team they receive training linked to the design of the different parts of the vehicle, design and simulation software, competition regulations, characteristics of the tests they will face, including marketing and business plans.

Many of the competitions in which they participate are abroad and the next in which they aspire to participate are in the United Kingdom and Hungary.

The team chooses its drivers among those who work more during the year in the development of the car.

“It implies many hours, but they are satisfactory,†concludes del Toro.
