Cartagena joins the World Day of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (26/09/2019)

On the occasion of the World HCI Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Day, this Monday, September 30 will illuminate the fountain of Isaac Peral, on the Alfonso XIII promenade.

With this, the Cartagena City Council joins the invitation made by the association of patients and relatives of this rare pathology, in order to give visibility, contributing to their knowledge.

HICI is a rare disease that is characterized by increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure within the cranial cavity without justified cause, this pressure manifests with constant headaches, vomiting, nausea, irreversible loss of vision, ringing of the ear, neck stiffness, back pain, malaise, neurological deficits and difficulty in performing daily tasks.

Many of these symptoms are similar to those of a brain tumor, which, in several cases, make diagnosis difficult.

The doctors responsible for diagnosing and treating patients living with this disease are neurologists, neurosurgeons and ophthalmologists.

The incidence of this disease in the population is 1 to 3 per 100,000 inhabitants.

This rare disease is especially devastating with children, since it prevents their intellectual development, they lose courses because of their symptoms and it affects them cognitively.
