The UPCT will be able to produce more bottles of its Tomás Ferro white wine, made with the traditional Merseguera grape from the Cartagena countryside, after the harvest that was made yesterday by more than fifty volunteers from the university community.
The Polytechnic calculates that more than 8,000 kilograms of grapes have been collected, which represents an increase of 25% compared to last year's harvest.
"Pruning two buds, instead of three, has given better results, with larger grape grains," he explains, together with the entry into production of grapevines that were grafted, explains the increase in harvest, according to the technicians of the Experimental Station Agroalimentaria Tomás Ferro that the UPCT has in the Cartagena deputation of La Palma.
Students, professors, staff of the University and users of the Leisure Gardens of the University of Seniors of the UPCT have returned today to the farm to collaborate in the pressing of the grapes collected yesterday, for which they have used a large capacity press provided by Bodegas Luzón, which is also expected to contribute to increasing the quality of the wine, which will begin to be distributed at the end of this year.
After the unraveling and fermentation processes, the wine will rest until it is bottled in December.
On this occasion and for the first time the UPCT will ferment a small part of the wine production in the barrel, to obtain a differentiated product from what is usual in white wines.
The Polytechnic of Cartagena has planted a hectare of grapes of the Merseguera variety, whose wine use is being recovered by the UPCT, because currently only 24 hectares of the Cartagena field are dedicated to this crop.
The companies of the Fuertes Bodegas Luzón and Agrifusa Group advise on agronomic and oenological matters to the UPCT for the production of Tomás Ferro wine, a collaboration that also allows the practical training of students of the School of Agronomists in these companies.
