MC Cartagena continues to encourage the legacy of illustrious characters in our history that, because of their work at a personal and / or professional level, have been transcendently meant, becoming a benchmark and a source of pride.
Along these lines, and coinciding with the celebration this week of World Photography Day, the deputy spokesman of the Municipal Group, Jesús Giménez, has advanced that "we will take to the Plenary two initiatives for the institutional recognition of José Casaú Abellán (1889 1973), outstanding figure for his photographic activity in Cartagena during the first decades of the 20th century. "
Casaú, although born in Lorca arrives in Cartagena a few months after his birth after the transfer of his family.
He opened his own studio in 1917, keeping almost 4,000 digitized photographs.
He specialized in photography to groups and urban landscapes and stood out in various facets such as social reporting and studio portrait.
Giménez has valued that "José Casaú was a true pioneer of photojournalism in Cartagena through images of such outstanding events as the coronation of the Virgen de la Caridad or the inauguration of the Heroes de Cavite monument by the kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia".
"He also had his own studio and worked for magazines such as 'La Unión Ilustrada' and 'Blanco y negro' and in press for 'ABC' and 'Cartagena Ilustrada'. His multifaceted facet also led him to be a bullfighting and theatrical entrepreneur and president of the Efesé ", explained the mayor of Cartagena.
The pioneering character of Casaú as a promoter of photojournalism in Cartagena bases the initiative of MC to "recognize his memory with the creation of an International Photojournalism Prize organized by the City Council of Cartagena and annual", calling attention to the fact that This union between photography and journalism offers "a naked truth, without dressings or opinion, which allows an immediate knowledge and a self-assessment that is recognized by society."
CEHIFORM Nomination
In relation to the Historic Photographic Center of the Region (CEHIFORM), MC will request the support of the Plenary to urge the "CARM Governing Council to be referred to hereinafter as the Historic Photographic Center of the Region of Murcia 'José Casaú Abellán' , as well as claiming his return to the municipality of Cartagena on the occasion of the 10 years of his transfer. "
This initiative, said Jesús Giménez, should serve as a souvenir "of the oppressive situation of CEHIFORM, moved to Murcia in the summer of 2010 from Cartagena, where it was based since its creation in 2001, and that has no prospect of return, like so many other organisms. "
Finally, the deputy spokesman of MC has expressed the recognition of the cartagenerista training to "Cartagena photographer Juan Manuel Díaz Burgos, director of CEHIFORM until they ceased in 2007 and whose compilation work resulted in their funds being tens of thousands of photographs, with more than prominent presence of the work of José Casaú ".
