The mixed begging team, composed of technicians from the Department of Social Services and agents of the Local Police of Cartagena, has worked during the weekend of August 17 and 18 in La Manga to assess the situation of people who ask in the street and offer the services of the council to those who need it.
As reported by the deputy mayor and councilor of the Area of Social Services, Noelia Arroyo, municipal officials identified six people who were parking or asking for alms on public roads and found that they all reside in the cities of Murcia and Torre Pacheco.
During this week from August 19 to 25, the technicians of the Department will contact the municipalities of origin of the people identified to share information with their respective social workers.
Arroyo recalled that the team was activated at the beginning of the month to detect an increase in the presence of pedigrees in the downtown streets.
“Almost all the people who ask in the street are beneficiaries of the services managed by the Department, but we believe that our officials should go out on the street on a regular basis to verify that there is no reason for need to ask for alms.
That is why this work will have continuity and we will insist on both the city and those areas of the municipality that require its presence.
The vice mayor of Cartagena has reported that the job of the officials is to ensure that the basic needs of these people are covered by municipal resources and those of the social associations that work in Cartagena.
“We have many institutions that work to help people with needs.
Families are provided with food, clothing, toiletries and help the accommodation to prevent anyone from being in the street or anyone having to go outside to ask.
And drug addiction rehabilitation programs are also offered, because drug addiction is behind the most common cases of begging in Cartagena. ”
Noelia Arroyo has recommended that the generosity of Cartagena be channeled through social organizations.
“Giving them alms does not solve problems and can interfere with rehabilitation programs.
Citizens who want to help will do so more effectively through these organizations, which are the ones that work alongside us to offer stable solutions to people with needs. ”
