Students, teachers and volunteers harvest next Tuesday in the UPCT vineyards (16/08/2019)

A hat to protect yourself from the sun, a lunch to keep your strength and a box of wine.

This will be the gift that students, teachers and volunteers receive to harvest next Tuesday, August 20, the Merseguera grape from the vineyards of Finca Tomás Ferro.

People close to members of the university community, primarily family friends, can go to harvest as volunteers.

Also students from all centers, Research Teaching Personnel (PDI) and Administration and Services Personnel (PAS), explains the director of the School of Agronomists, Arantxa Aznar.

With the grape harvested, on Wednesday, Tomás Ferro wine will be made from 7:30 am.

This variety, traditional of the Field of Cartagena, has been recovered by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

At present, only 25 hectares are planted.

The research project started years ago has resulted in the training of Agronomists in Viticulture and the creation of this wine made with this grape, which is grown using controlled deficit irrigation technology to achieve the maximum potential of the variety.

The Tomás Ferro estate, where the vine is grown, combines the tradition of a grape adapted to the land and the local climate with the use of modern agronomic technologies that enhance its quality and enable water savings during its production.

Last summer, the UPCT vineyards produced 6,000 kilos of grapes that allowed bottling 3,000 liters of wine.
